Lavendula
Lavender All Lavenders are evergreen
shrubs. Treat it as a Mediterranean plant and give it as much sun as
possible, especially the more tender varieties. Plant it in fairy dry and
well drained soil, preferably sandy, loamy soil. If you have unsuitable
soil grow in containers. Dead–head regularly and cut back in autumn. Each type of Lavender has a different scent. To us, the best is that of the old fashioned Lavender, Lavandula angustifolia – strong, evocative and sweet smelling. Grow lavender at the edge of a
border so that you will brush it as you walk by. That is when the oils are
released and the aroma is at its strongest. Lavandula angustifolia ‘Arctic Snow’ Very hardy. Ht 50cm. Clear white flowers above dark silver foliage. Lavandula angustifolia ’Hidcote Blue’ Very hardy Compact plant, deep blue–purple flowers on long stems in summer. Ht. 45cm. Good for hedging. Beautiful colour. Lavandula angustifolia ‘Imperial Gem’ Very hardy Ht 60cm. Silver grey foliage. The most beautiful deepest purple flowers. Lavandula angustifolia ‘Jean Davis’ Very hardy Ht 60cm. Upright habit, dense grey-green leaves. Lovely pink flowers. Lavandula angustifolia ‘Dwarf Blue’. Very hardy, ht 30cm. Compact habit and dark blue flowers. Good for containers Lavandula x intermedia ‘Edelweiss’ Hardy Ht 50cm. Tall stems of long white flowers above silvery leaves. Lavandula x intermedia ‘Grosso’ Hardy Taller pale blue flowers. Silver serrated leaves and tall mauve/ blue flowers in summer and early autumn. Reputed to be tender but grew outdoors easily for us in Leeds. Lavandula x christiana Deep blue – purple flowers on long stems arranged as a trident that stand well clear of the foliage. Ht 45cm. Long flowering season. Not fully hardy but the flowers and serrated silver leaves compensate well for tenderness. Spicy scent. Want to learn more about how to grow lavender? Special Offer
