Green Garden Herbs

Salvia Sage

Salvia officinalis, the traditional culinary variety is a Mediterranean herb and grows best in a dry sunny position but adapt well to our climate and grow in part shade and tolerate much rain. All are evergreen shrubs. Our favourite variety is Purple Sage, with enhanced taste, beautiful smoky mauve leaves and pretty contrasting pink flowers.

Our favourites are the Fruit Scented Sages, named because of their highly aromatic leaves.

Raspberry Sage and Peach Sage are semi evergreen shrubs and are hardy if grown in a sunny and fairly sheltered position. They should be pruned to 20cm in spring. They flower from May to September.

Blackcurrant Sage is similar in appearance and growing requirements with crimson red flowers and leaves slightly rounded with the aroma of blackcurrants.

Pineapple Sage is a tender evergreen shrub that has bright red flowers in winter, making it a good conservatory plant. Its leaves have a strong pineapple scent.

Tangerine Sage is very similar but flowers all summer.

We grow about 40 different varieties of pretty salvias.
